It all happened last year, when U.S. defense senior leadership had approved the regulation and new guidance that all Department of Defense (DoD) contractors who handle, process, store and transmit Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) would have to abide to a minimum security standard. The standard must be met by defense contractors by filing compliance and audit data documents as it relates to the new Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement or what is now referred to as DFARS. The DFARS was passed and implemented late in 2017. However, defense contractors who managed their own existing contracts must have already met the DFARS standards on December 31, 2017 or Defense Federal Contractors who had missed the deadline risked losing their contracts if they are not considered to be fully compliant. The DFARS is a set of basic requirements set forth by DoD in order to safeguard data from various types of cyber-attacks from adversaries and other threat actors here and abroad. These security controls must be implemented at both the contractor and subcontractor levels based on the information security guidance listed in the new regulation standard NIST Special Publication 800-171 “Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Non-Federal Information Systems and Organizations.” Redport Information Assurance, LLC is currently here to assist those contractors that need to be compliant quickly.
